12 Person Overnight Adventure

Day 1 – 4:30 p.m. to Day 2 – 12:30 p.m.

Imagine sleeping under a blanket of stars so close you can almost touch them, where the night’s silence wraps you in the spirit of the West and where the aroma of campfire coffee and the stirring of horses in the early light fill you with the lure of the open range.

As you saddle up and head off toward the horizon, your every sense tells you that you’ve finally found it, the chance to play cowboy...for real.

DAY 1

3:30 p.m. – Guests leave Las Vegas for Sandy Valley Ranch (SVR) for an hour’s trip back in time to the Wild West of 100 years ago. Transportation provided by the Client. SVR can provide transportation for an additional fee. If desired and for an additional fee, the bus can stop and pick up a hitch-hiking Western Character in Jean to entertain with questionable humor, cowboy poetry and cowboy lies (which are basically the same thing) for the last half of the ride to the Ranch. He will remain with the guests during the event and provide further entertainment.

4:30 p.m. – Guests arrive at Sandy Valley Ranch and are greeted by Bandits and cowboys on horseback that will “hold-up” the guests and direct them to the Ranch House for a warm Western welcome and orientation. Guests will receive souvenir bandanas and straw cowboy hats to get them in the spirit!

The group will be divided into two outlaw gangs distinguished by their bandana color. Gangs pick a gang leader who is responsible for a burlap bag containing the hay cubes that the gang members earn for their expertise in the various activities. Awards are given for the team with the most hay cubes. Some sneaky gangs even try to steal the other gang’s cubes. Each gang will also receive “wild cards” that may be used to substitute in a Ranch staff member for any activity. The Gang Leader may elect to have another gang member substitute as well. Gangs will earn one point for each wild card they turn back in at the end of the adventure.

5:00 p.m. Trail Rides and Games – Gang one will head to the barn and mount up for an hour’s trail ride. Gang two will head for the Cowboy Games:

Horseback Trail Ride – Our trail rides are designed to allow guests to become comfortable with a horse (if they aren’t already) and to explore the range on our more than 300 square miles of pristine sage and mesquite ranch land. Riders will enjoy the beautiful Nevada desert and mountain scenery. We don’t ride “nose to tail” and our horses are well trained to handle both inexperienced and experienced riders. This is a non-competitive event.
Axe Throwing – Guests learn the knack of throwing a tomahawk-like axe at a target. It takes both skill and grace and ladies seem to get the knack of it quicker than the guys. Of course, hay cubes are awarded for each hit. Throwin’ at the boss is discouraged! One hay cube awarded for each axe in the target.
Box Hockey – This is an old cowboy game similar to foosball. One hay cube awarded for participating.
Bucking Barrel – Participants mount a barrel tethered about four-feet off the ground (as if riding a buckin’ bronc) and are bounced up and down by our ranch hands. This simulates what it is like for cowboys who ride Broncs but is much safer. It really warms up the group, and gets ‘em hootin’ and hollerin’. One hay cube awarded for participating.
Cow Pie Toss – The objective of this game is to toss a dried cow pie (cow poop) into a hoop on the ground. Participants wear gloves and it’s a lot harder than it sounds (no pun intended). One cube awarded for each hay cube in the circle.
Horseshoes – This is the traditional horseshoe pitching game where participants “pitch” (throw) horseshoes a distance of approximately twenty-feet and try to get a “ringer” (throw the horseshoe around the metal stake), a “leaner” (lean the shoe against the stake), or “closest-to-the-pole.” Two hay cubes awarded for a ringer. One hay cube awarded for a leaner.
• Roping Lessons – Participants are instructed on how to use a lasso, just like cowboys do ropin’ cattle. Guests practice on a “fake and friendly” steer (but watch out, we’ve noticed he dodges to the right). One hay cube awarded for each catch.

6:00 p.m. – Gangs switch activities.

Throughout the Games – Nibblin’s and Drinks – That’s cocktails and hors d’oeuvres for the fancy cowboys. The Client will choose two hors d’oeuvres. Soda, coffee, tea and bottled water will be available. Alcohol will be available if provided by the Client. Cost for SVR to transport alcohol: $100.

7:00 p.m. Wagon Rides to Cow Camp – Guests climb into the world’s oldest means of transportation for a short, scenic ride through the mesquites. The Wagon holds fourteen people. As many trips as necessary will be made to transport all guests and their gear to Camp. Our “gentle giants,” huge Belgian draft horses, pull the wagons.

7:30 p.m. – Dinner at Cow Camp – Dinner will be served in a cozy pavilion on the range, just the way the cowboys dined, ‘cept you won’t have to squat by the fire – tables and benches are provided. A few cattle may mosey on by during dinner, and a pot bellied stove and two campfires will keep things warm if it’s cold. You might even hear a few coyotes howl, if they’re not feelin’ lazy. Dinner will consist of lip smackin’ ribs, cowboy steaks and grilled barbequed chicken. Side dishes included are: a mixed green salad with choice of 2 dressings, home-made hot corn bread with honey butter, cowboy beans, and potato, plus coffee, soda, tea, water, alcoholic beverages (if provided by the Client). A tasty dessert tops off the meal. An acoustic guitarist will entertain around during dinner and around the campfire.

SVR Wranglers will usually engage guests in a little Quick Draw action around the campfire. But no matter where the action occurs, guests love to stand back-to-back and walk those ten paces and then draw their gun from their holster and fire! Guests can compete against one another or against our tough Bandits. The guns we use are replicas of Single Action Colt Pistols that were used in the Wild West. They don’t fire real bullets (in fact, the barrels are plugged), just blanks, which makes this activity safe yet very exciting.

Lights Out – Guests will sleep in range teepees. These are replicas of tents used by the pioneers crossing the plains. Sleeping bags, mats, pillows, extra blankets, and flashlights will be supplied by SVR. Guests’ personal gear will be transported to Cow Camp by Ranch staff.

DAY 2

6:00 a.m. – Morning Coffee, Tea and Campfire

7:00 a.m. – Breakfast at Cow Camp – A tasty one-entrée breakfast will be prepared by our camp cook

7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. – Wagon Rides back to Ranch – The wagon will be available for rides back to the Ranch House for showers, etc.

8:00 a.m. – Team Cattle Penning in the Arena – The guests will have a hoot-and-a-half trying their hand at Team Cattle Penning. After a demonstration by our Wranglers, teams of guests volunteer to mount our well-trained horses and develop a strategy to move an ornery herd of cattle from one end of the arena into a pen at the other end. The fastest team to get every last cow in the pen wins. This is good practice for the Cattle Drive which is to follow.

9:00 a.m. – Cattle Drive – Gang 1 rounds up the cattle and drives them across the desert to a half-way point followed by the Chuck Wagon carrying Gang 2. Any lost cattle and the Gang loses cow chips. At the halfway point Gangs switch places and Gang 2 drives the cattle back to the Ranch. Don’t lose any of those critters on the way home or you lose some chips. Wild Cards can be used for this activity.

11:00 a.m. – Lunch in the Ranch House – Cowboys and Cowgirls mosey into the Ranch House for a delicious two-entrée lunch buffet bar featuring Smokey Burgers with cheese, Old West Chinese Laundry Chicken Salad, Potato Salad, and a lip smackin’ dessert. Coffee, tea, water and soda are included, as well as alcoholic beverages if provided by the Client.

12:00 p.m. – Awards Ceremony – Bandits will round everyone up for the ever-popular Sandy Valley Ranch Awards Ceremony. Hay cubes will be counted under the watchful eyes of our Wranglers and special awards will be given to guests accomplishing amazing and unusual feats throughout the event such as:

• Best Cowpoke with a Rope
• Most Accurate with a Cow Pie
• Most Courageous Bucking Barrel Rider

And, some lucky guest may even be awarded the world famous and much sought-after Sandy Valley Ranch Golden Cow Pie.

12.30 p.m. – Guests bid a sad farewell to the Ranch and head back to the 21st century.
